According to Michiganâs Department of Education Five Michigan school districts are being awarded federally funded literacy grants of $3 million each over a five-year period.
The grant will be focused on advancing literacy skills, including pre-literacy skills, reading, and writing, for children from birth through grade 12 in the following districts: Benton Harbor Area Schools, Detroit Public Schools Community District, Flint Community Schools, Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System, and Pontiac School District.

K-12 schools now number one source of COVID-19 outbreaks in Michigan

K-12 schools are now the largest source of new COVID-19 outbreaks in Michigan. In the first week of March, the state recorded 47 separate outbreaks at K-12 schools in which a combined 221 students, teachers and staff tested positive for the virus.
The same week, 24 more outbreaks took place at daycare centers and “youth programs,” a category that includes school sports. Together, the 71 school- and youth-related outbreaks accounted for more than 40 percent of all new outbreaks in Michigan during a week in which about 7,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported and more than 100 people died from the disease.

In-person learning returns in Detroit public schools but some teachers and parents are unsure
But as the doors to schools reopened the district faces a major challenge with a teacher shortage. It s good to see students back, it is great to see teachers back in school, said Dr. Nikolai Vitti, superintendent.
The head of the Detroit Public Schools Community District and the President of the teachers union was on hand Monday morning to welcome students and families back to in-person learning now that Covid 19 infection rates have significantly declined.
