DETROIT – When
Kwame Kilpatrick had his sentence commuted by former President Donald Trump bad memories started emerging for Steve Dolunt, a retired Detroit police assistant chief.
On Tuesday, Dolunt shared the painful period in his life and career during Kilpatrick’s tenure as Detroit mayor.
“They went through hell worrying about me and I didn’t realize it at the time how they were worried about me,” he said.
Dolunt got emotional talking about the incredible stress his family was under that started back in 2003 when his life and career were turned upside down.

Donald Trump’s final batch of more than 140 pardons and sentence commutations, issued in his last hours as president, benefited an ignominious list of defendants whose swindles, frauds and public corruption made them unlikely candidates for executive clemency. The recipients included people who not only abused their own positions of power but who also leveraged well-placed connections to pursue pardons from a president willing to use his authority to bless patrons and friends.

Kilpatrick, once a political rising star, was serving 28 years for an array of crimes before Donald Trump commuted his sentence.

Donald Trump in his term’s final hours, has been photographed in Atlanta with his family.
A brief video posted on social media by a member of Kilpatrick’s family showed him hugging two of his sons and his sister,
Ayanna, after arriving at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. Another family photo of him and his father,
Bernard, standing together is making the rounds on social media sites.
"(Kilpatrick's) sentence was 28 years," he said. "And I think reasonable minds can disagree about that. I can see a lot of people thinking that it is excessive. But what he eventually only served, was seven years."
