East Tennessee State Universityâs College of Nursing is offering an online Graduate Certificate in Health Care Genetics and Genomics. The certification is designed to prepare students to utilize knowledge of genetics, genomics, epigenetics, pharmacogenetics, genetic testing and genetic counseling in their practice. It will also provide knowledge of how genetic makeup and environment may contribute to the development of common inherited disorders.
Genetics is the study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics. Genomics is the study of the entirety of an organismâs genes, or genomes.
While the certificate program is open to any student with a bachelorâs degree and builds upon general knowledge in biology and health-related sciences, Dr. Alex Sargsyan, assistant professor in the College of Nursing and coordinator of the Health Care Genetics and Genomics Program, said, âthe certificate should appeal to potential students who have interests in healt

Dr. Retha Gentry, associate professor in East Tennessee State Universityâs College of Nursing, was recently named a 2021 Tennessee Rising Star Nurse Leader as part of the 40 Under 40 Nurse Leaders program.
Award selection was based on criteria determined by leaders from the Tennessee Action Coalition, Tennessee Nurses Association, and Tennessee Hospital Association. The honorees were chosen based on leadership among peers and others, professional growth and development, contribution to building a culture of health in their community, and commitment as a role model for health.

Amerigroup Creates Scholarship for ETSU Nursing Students Interested in Rural Healthcare

Driven by a commitment to improve healthcare in rural and distressed areas of Tennessee, Amerigroup Tennessee has created a new scholarship opportunity at East Tennessee State University’s College of Nursing.
Applications are currently being accepted for the Amerigroup Rural Medicine Scholarship (ARMS), which will be awarded in the fall of 2021 to three students in ETSU’s Master of Science in Nursing-Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN-FNP) concentration. Valued at $52,000 per student, the scholarship will cover all tuition and fees.
