Tennessee State Unemployment Inches Upward During December
State Adds Nearly 11,000 New Jobs Between November And December Thursday, January 21, 2021 Statewide unemployment inched upwards during the final month of 2020, according to newly released data from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
The preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December 2020 is 6.4 percent, an increase of 1.2 percentage points from November’s revised rate of 5.2 percent. Tennessee’s latest jobless statistic remains below the national unemployment rate.
Unemployment across the state has fluctuated since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. It reached its all-time high of 15.5 percent in April 2020 and is currently just over 3 percentage points higher than the state’s pre-pandemic unemployment rate.
Each of Tennesseeâs 95 counties experienced decreased unemployment in November 2020, according to new data released Wednesday, Dec. 23, by Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD).
Unemployment rates in 41 counties are now less than 5%, and 54 counties recorded rates of 5% or higher during the month.
Overton Countyâs unemployment rate was 4.2% for November, down from 5.9% in October. Overton had 450 unemployed of a workforce of 10,628. Overton Countyâs number of employed residents in November was 10,178, down from 9,592 in October. Overton Countyâs unemployment rate was 3.2% in November 2019.
Overton County is included in the Cookeville Micropolitan Statistical Area, along with Putnam County and Jackson County. Unemployment in the Cookeville MSA was 4.6% in November, down from 6.2% in October, with 2,466 unemployed of a workforce of 53,063.

Tennessee Counties Experience Significant Decreases in Unemployment During the Month
Nashville, TN – Each of Tennessee’s 95 counties experienced decreased unemployment in November 2020, according to new data released Thursday by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD).
Montgomery County unemployment in November was 5.4 percent, down 2.2 percent from October’s 7.3 percent.
Unemployment rates in 41 counties are now less than 5%. Fifty-four counties recorded rates of 5% or higher during the month.
Williamson County had the lowest unemployment rate. At 3.3%, its November rate dropped by 1.3 percentage points when compared to October. The new rate is just 1 percentage point higher than it was in November 2019.
