Brexit has been branded a “disaster” by Scotland’s Constitution Secretary as he claimed a vote for the SNP in May’s elections would be a “step towards normality”.
Leaving the EU has hurt food exporters, fishermen, financial services and students, Mike Russell said in a statement to Holyrood, as he pushed for a return to the bloc if Scotland secured independence.

The SNP MP was challenged by Scottish Labour constitution spokesman Anas Sarwar on a new report from the London School of Economics (LSE) released on Wednesday, which said independence would hit Scotland harder than Brexit. Mr Russell said the report relied on Scotland not changing a single policy after it became independent. He added: I m grateful for the input, I always consider it seriously, but I have reservations about it and have expressed them in a reasoned and reasonable way.

At the start of the pandemic the Tory UK Government did the right thing as they uprated Universal Credit by £20 per week.
It was an unspoken acknowledgement that after years of austerity cuts Universal Credit wasn’t sufficient to get by on.
Indeed, according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, even with the £1040 uplift this year, families unable to find work will on average receive £1,600 less per year in social security support than they would have done in 2011. Those with children will receive £2,900 less.
And it is even worse for larger families – because of the two child limit, they will lose £5,400 each year.
