Intermittent spikes of lead in water reach four times acceptable level

The water in Waikouaiti and Karitane is not fit to drink, cook or prepare food with, until further notice. Water tankers are on the way to the areas. Tests of the area s water was done on 8 December, 2020. Results were sent to a Dunedin City Council Three Waters staff member on 18 December. But the results were not made known until some time in 2021, because that staff member was on holiday.

Authorities should have warned about lead in water earlier — residents

Authorities initially thought it might be a localised problem, but Tuesday’s tests results showed lead in the reservoir that supplies both towns. Karitāne School Board of Trustees chairwoman Jane Schofield said the water in the area has never been great and for 12 years she has been driving to and from Dunedin in order to get drinking water. “We have carted water from town [Dunedin] because the water is revolting here. And now to find out that it s actually not even safe to be consuming, it s just horrifying,” Schofield said. Authorities have warned residents not to boil the water, saying that does not remove lead but instead increases its concentration.

Residents really upset about high lead levels in water
