Palantir Technologies deal under legal scrutiny – Channel EYE

Posted on February 26, 2021 by Nick Farrell - News Tech-justice outfit Foxglove has issued a lawsuit on behalf of news site openDemocracy over a National Health Services deal with the controversial big data firm Palantir Technologies. The lawsuit claims that NHS England failed to consider the impact of the deal on patients and the public by performing a fresh Data Protection Impact Assessment. Foxglove founding director Cori Crider and openDemocracy editor in chief, Mary Fitzgerald, warned that it could damage the future of the NHS. “The government has a legal duty to consult us, citizens and NHS users, before they strike massive deals which affect that future. In doing so, they need to take important steps (like conducting ‘data protection impact assessments’) to ensure our health information and our rights are protected”, Crider and Fitzgerald said.

Improving Cybersecurity within Higher Education - Infosecurity Magazine

Improving Cybersecurity within Higher Education For higher education institutions, the start of the new academic year was unlike any witnessed before. The sector was contending with trying to reopen campuses in a COVID-safe way for both staff and students, but also received a stark warning from The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) about the rising number of cyber-attacks against colleges and universities. Currently up to a thousand attacks a year target higher education institutions across the UK, often in the form of phishing and ransomware attacks that can leave staff and students open to account hacking, credential theft and credit card fraud, and leave networks, which may house large amounts of IP and data, sometimes on behalf of industry and government, vulnerable. As a result, the institutions face substantial risks and security breaches can have significant and long-lasting repercussions.
