The City of St. George is gearing up to build a monument downtown to honor families whose loved ones were killed while in military service.
The Gold Star Families Foundation is a nationwide organization that recognizes military families and their lost loved ones. Like a similar one alrady installed in Ogden, this Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is planned to be in the center of downtown in the Historic Town Square. It s supported by two non-profit organizations, the Woody Williams Foundation and the Major Brent Taylor Foundation.
Jennie Taylor, founder of the Major Brent Taylor Foundation, has worked closely with the committee in St. George to give insight into the project.
A relay team from Carry The Load, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to bring awareness of the sacrifices made each day by our military, veterans, first responders and their families, will travel through the Rocket City on May 22.
âIt really means that people care enough to think about those whom they never knew, but they know lost their lives because of serving this country,â Julie Kink, a Gold Star sister, said when asked what it means to her when people she doesnât know do things to honor those whoâve died while serving.
âIt means that people in the general public care enough to recognize that Memorial Day is something special and itâs not only the official start to summer,â she said.
