In a press release, its State deputy secretary P.S.Masilamani expressed resentment over the circular issued on February 9 to cooperative institutions stating that the crop loans re-structured in view of the crop loss suffered by the farmers due to drought would not be considered for the waiver under the present scheme.

In their appeal, they have pointed out that in the absence of a stringent mechanism, farmers from other districts and traders dispose their stock at the DPCs opened in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai districts that have been set up exclusively to purchase the paddy harvested by Delta farmers. P. Kalyanam of Arupathi, general secretary, Federation of Farmers Associations of Delta Districts (FFADD), has called upon the District Administrations to post special teams to monitor the movement of paddy through check-posts in the district borders during the procurement period.

In a statement, Association secretary Sundara Vimalanathan said nearly 40 lakh farmers, cultivating various crops and agriculture/horticulture produces on the lands taken on lease by them from Hindu temples, mutts, choultries, mosques/dargahs, churches and other charitable trusts have not been covered under the scheme where ₹6,000 was given as financial assistance annually. It also sought doubling of the assistance and a monthly pension of ₹4,500 for the farmhands aged 60 years and above.

Association submits memorandum to State government Delta farmers have urged the State government to convene a tripartite meeting usually convened in October-November every year to discuss and chart out a plan for paddy procurement for the current season. Details of procurement of paddy raised as samba, thaladi and summer crops in delta districts are discussed by Revenue and Civil Supplies officials and farmers at the meeting chaired by Agriculture and Food Ministers. Since harvest is set to begin from the third week of December, the annual meeting must be convened as early as possible, they said.
