The Tamilnadu Vivasayigal Sangam has demanded that the crop loans re-structured during 2017 also be covered under the ₹12,110 crore waiver scheme announced by the Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palanisamy under Rule 110 on the floor of the State Legislative Assembly recently.
In a press release, its State deputy secretary P.S.Masilamani expressed resentment over the circular issued on February 9 to cooperative institutions stating that the crop loans re-structured in view of the crop loss suffered by the farmers due to drought would not be considered for the waiver under the present scheme.

THANJAVUR Farmers’ representatives of Thanjavur district have pleaded with the State government to take over the crop loans sanctioned by commercial banks and relieve farmers of debt burden fully.
Raising the demand at the agricultural grievances meeting chaired by Collector, M.Govinda Rao here on Tuesday, the farmers thanked the State government for waiving the crop loans to the tune of ₹12,000 crores disbursed through the cooperative institutions. Pointing out that in the recent past many farmers have lost their eligibility to draw fresh loans from the cooperative institutions as they were not able to repay the earlier loans on time due to crop losses, the farmers representatives such farmers had to necessarily depend on commercial banks for loans to continue cultivation.

Delta farmers have suggested certain measures to the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation to ensure that their produce alone be procured at the direct purchase centres (DPCs) opened in the delta districts during this samba/thaladi season.
In their appeal, they have pointed out that in the absence of a stringent mechanism, farmers from other districts and traders dispose their stock at the DPCs opened in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai districts that have been set up exclusively to purchase the paddy harvested by Delta farmers.
P. Kalyanam of Arupathi, general secretary, Federation of Farmers Associations of Delta Districts (FFADD), has called upon the District Administrations to post special teams to monitor the movement of paddy through check-posts in the district borders during the procurement period.

Thanjavur District Cauvery Farmers Protection Association has urged the Union government to extend benefits of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme to tenant farmers also.
In a statement, Association secretary Sundara Vimalanathan said nearly 40 lakh farmers, cultivating various crops and agriculture/horticulture produces on the lands taken on lease by them from Hindu temples, mutts, choultries, mosques/dargahs, churches and other charitable trusts have not been covered under the scheme where ₹6,000 was given as financial assistance annually.
It also sought doubling of the assistance and a monthly pension of ₹4,500 for the farmhands aged 60 years and above.
Association submits memorandum to State government
Delta farmers have urged the State government to convene a tripartite meeting usually convened in October-November every year to discuss and chart out a plan for paddy procurement for the current season.
Details of procurement of paddy raised as
samba,
thaladi and summer crops in delta districts are discussed by Revenue and Civil Supplies officials and farmers at the meeting chaired by Agriculture and Food Ministers. Since harvest is set to begin from the third week of December, the annual meeting must be convened as early as possible, they said.
In a memorandum addressed to the Chief Secretary to the Tamil Nadu government and other senior officials heading the concerned departments involved in procurement process, Sundara Vimalanathan, secretary, Thanjavur District Cauvery Farmers Protection Association, has urged the government to convene the meeting immediately in order to enlighten farmers about preparations made by offici
