The Tennessee Department of Health has “critical gaps” in its vaccination program after two highly placed employees moved to other jobs in June, leaving the agency hamstrung as vaccination rates sputter and infections rise, according to an internal report obtained by The Tennessean.
The employees were a senior epidemiologist who surveilled infectious diseases and served as an unofficial deputy to the state’s vaccine chief and another official who ran the state’s federally funded Vaccines for Children Program, which inoculates kids who are uninsured or enrolled in TennCare.
Both departures, which appear to be the result of routine turnover, have not been publicly reported until now. These departures were in advance of and in addition to the recent termination of the state’s vaccine chief, Dr. Michelle Fiscus, who was abruptly fired last week.
NASHVILLE â Days after she was fired under pressure from Republican legislators, Tennesseeâs former vaccinations director has issued a point-by-point rebuttal to a letter recommending her removal and to other claims by state officials about the program she ran that offers shots for children.
The July 9 letter from the stateâs chief medical officer said Michelle Fiscus should be removed due to complaints about her leadership approach and her handling of a letter explaining vaccination rights of minors for COVID-19 shots, an effort that had GOP lawmakers fuming.
Fiscus has accused Health Commissioner Lisa Piercey of terminating her âto appease a handful of outraged and uninformed legislators.â
While the department is evaluating marketing efforts for parents, information and access about all vaccines will continue.

TENNESSEE, USA The Tennessee Department of Health said it is working to clarify misinformation that it is stopping childhood immunization and vaccine efforts in the state after it ended vaccine messaging programs in Tennessee schools.
After the high profile firing of Tennessee s top vaccine official, internal documents and emails first reported by the Tennessean showed that the TDH would end all vaccine outreach for adolescents and stop all vaccine events on school property.
