Chief Minister M K Stalin said in a statement that the lockdown was being enforced due to “unavoidable reasons” and pointed out that the decision was taken based on inputs received at a review meeting he had with district collectors on Friday, besides consultations with medical experts.

As part of the new restrictions, government and private offices will be allowed to function only with 50% employees, public transport including passenger trains and buses, metro trains and taxis will operate at 50% of their capacity. Only non air-conditioned provision and grocery stores will be allowed to function till noon and only 50% customers can get into these shops. Restaurants and hotels are allowed to sell food through parcels. Tea shops can be open till noon. Markets and meat shops can function only on weekdays between 6 a.m. and noon. They will be shut on Saturdays and Sundays.

Ramadoss said crowding at liquor shops is not the only reason for the demand to close the liquor shops.

The Madras High Court has dismissed writ petitions filed by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac), which holds exclusive right to sell liquor in both wholesale and retail across the State, against reopening of its tax assessments for previous years on the ground of alleged evasion. The Income Tax Department had accused the corporation of routing its profit to the State government by way of frequent revision of special privilege fee instead of paying dividend from profits after taxation. Justice S.M. Subramaniam refused to interfere with the decision to reopen the assessments after referring to an observation made by an Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax that Tasmac was adopting a colourable device to evade legitimate payment of tax to the coffers of the Central government.
