Unemployment levels across Ireland due to the pandemic
“The information shows pandemic unemployment payment figures (and Covid-adjusted unemployment rates) are higher on a per capita basis in western counties in which the local labour force is more reliant on consumer-facing and labour-intensive sectors such as retail and accommodation,” said a Central Bank spokesperson. He said counties like Dublin had a higher share of jobs in ICT and finance and sectors that had a greater capacity for working from home.
Labour employment spokesperson Senator Marie Sherlock told the
Irish Independent: “We know that retail, wholesale and the hospitality sector are the sectors heavily accounted for in those claiming the PUP payment at this point of time.”

Some 460,000 people will receive the Pandemic Unemployment Payment this week - an increase of over 15% in the last seven days, according to the Department of Social Protection.
The 62,715 rise in claims reflects the re-introduction of tighter public health restrictions and more business closures as the prevalence of Covid-19 has risen in recent weeks.
Construction saw the highest weekly increase of almost 75%, rising from 32,152 last week to 56,217 people, following the closure of many sites on Friday 9 January.
However, today s total for PUP claims still falls short of the peak of around 600,000 claims last May.

Preliminary statements of tax liability will be available to PAYE workers through the MyAccount portal on the Revenue.ie website from today.
Over 630,000 people will be hit with tax bills from Revenue today.
Those who received the two main Covid-19 support schemes last year should pay particular attention to this document.
