SALT LAKE CITY Police in Cache County arrested a man who they say became so angry that a convenience store wouldn’t sell him beer for $1 that employees had to lock him out of the store.
The 47-year-old man entered a convenience store in North Park Monday night and “demanded” that an employee sell him beer, a police booking affidavit states.
But the man only offered to pay $1.
“The employee said to the male that $1 wasn’t enough to purchase the beer. Employee stated after being told he couldn’t purchase the beer, the male became belligerent and started yelling and smacking things,” according to the affidavit.
A man accused of utilizing multiple âspanking sticksâ to punish children was charged in 1st District Court on Monday.
Charles Allan Olson, 43, faces 10 counts of second-degree child abuse and one count of first-degree aggravated kidnapping. Olson was arrested and booked into the Cache County Jail on Friday.
During his initial appearance on Monday, defense counsel disputed the kidnapping charge and asked for Olsonâs release. Judge Angela Fonnesbeck denied release for the time being and set a hearing to determine his bail status for March 8.

A probable cause affidavit filed with the court states six children were interviewed about alleged physical abuse by Olson. Based on the interviews, deputies wrote Olson utilized sticks made of wood, plastic, metal and twisted wire to punish the children. The sticks had various names, according to deputies, including âOld Bamboo,â âWhite Lightning,â âSammy Kablame,â and âsolid
Zachary Aaron Kidd, 36, was granted release from jail on Wednesday to receive treatment at an inpatient facility.
Kidd was arrested and booked into jail on Feb. 1 after notifying police of an âactive bomb threatâ at the 1st District Courthouse. He was charged with a single count of second-degree threat of terrorism; by the letter of the law, he could face 1-15 years in the Utah State Prison if convicted.
During his appearance in 1st District Court, defense counsel told the court Kidd had a spot available at a treatment facility. Due to COVID-19 restrictions at the facility, attorney Herm Olsen told the court Kidd would have to stay at a hotel for a week before being admitted.
A 73-year-old man charged with multiple sexual assault felonies had his jury trial cancelled on Wednesday.
Richard Royal Cornell appeared in 1st District Court virtually from the Cache County Jail for a final pretrial conference. During his appearance, Cornellâs jury trial â set to begin on April 7 â was struck from the courtâs calendar due to COVID-19 restrictions on the courts. Judge Brian Cannell said a recent order from Utah Supreme Court Chief Justice Matthew Durrant pushed out jury trials until June.
According to the order issued on Feb. 19, all in-person oral arguments and appellate court committee meetings are suspended through June 30.
