The Goods and Services Tax Council, led by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on Friday decided to exempt Integrated Goods and Services Tax on import of free Covid-related supplies till August 31,
The Indian Express reported. The council also added Amphotericin B, the drug used in the treatment of mucormycosis, or “black fungus”, in the list of items exempted from the IGST.
India reported 1,86,364 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours on Friday morning, taking the overall tally to 2,75,55,457 since the pandemic first broke out in January 2020. The toll rose by 3,660 to 31,88,95, while the active caseload stood at 23,43,152.

Coronavirus infections in the South Asia region surpassed 30 million yesterday, according to a Reuters tally of official data, led by India which is struggling with a second Covid-19 wave and a vaccine shortage across the region.
India, the second most-populous country in the world, this month recorded its highest Covid-19 death toll since the pandemic began last year, accounting for just over a third of the overall total.
The South Asia region - India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives and Sri Lanka - accounts for 18% of global cases and almost 10% of deaths.
Delhi reported 1,141 new coronavirus cases today and 139 deaths in the last 24 hours - a steady decline in the past few days - as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that the capital will start gradually unlocking from Monday.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said Delhi has somehow gained control over the second wave of COVID-19 and the city will now start the process of lifting the lockdown gradually.
He, however, said the fight against the virus has not ended. At a meeting of Delhi Disaster Management Authority on Friday, it was decided that the lockdown be lifted gradually. In the process, we have to take care of the lowest strata first . daily wagers, labourers, migrant workers, he said.
