Martins Ferry library could lose $25K per year | News, Sports, Jobs

Times Leader Staff Writer MARTINS FERRY City Council learned Wednesday that public libraries across the state, including Martins Ferry’s facility, may receive less state funding starting July 1. Richard Hord, who is a new Belmont County District Library board member, informed council about the situation. He said the state Public Library Fund may see a decrease from the current rate of 1.7 percent of the state’s General Revenue Fund to 1.66 percent. He asked city officials to voice their support for the library and concern about the decrease in funding by contacting state representatives. Mayor John Davies said the city would send a letter to officials doing that.

Times Leader Staff Writer MARTINS FERRY ­– A Martins Ferry resident has been arrested for allegedly filming a young child naked and then sharing those videos with others. Police Chief John McFarland said that Scott A. Lewis of 106 N. Ridge Drive, Martins Ferry, was arrested Sunday on several charges including: 14 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity oriented material; 16 counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor (creation, production, publishing obscene material); two counts of endangering children; two counts of voyeurism; and two counts of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles. McFarland said his department received information from the Internet Crimes Against Children group about Lewis. The group received its information from its cyber tip line via the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

(Photo Provided) Ayers Elementary School students were evacuated from their building because of a “threatening message” found in a bathroom at the school Monday morning. In a phone message sent out to parents at about 11:50 a.m., Superintendent Jim Fogle said students were being transferred to the high school/middle school building next door because of the message found inside a restroom at the elementary school building. The nature of the note was not mentioned in Fogle’s message to parents.
