East Texas High Schooler Wins Vehicle for Donating Blood
One of my favorite phrases is a quote by St. Francis of Assisi, For it is in giving that we receive. Well, an East Texas high school student put that into practice after she was awarded a brand new SUV for donating blood.
On Thursday, 18-year old Megan Hunt of West Rusk High School was presented the keys to a free Chevy, courtesy of The Thompson Group Classic Chevrolet Fleet and Commercial. By donating blood during a critical shortage at a recent Carter BloodCare blood drive at her school, she was automatically entered to win.
Blood is not easy to come by, especially this time of year and during a pandemic. However, hospitals continue to order blood products for their transfusion-dependent patients at all hours, when moments could mean the difference between life and death. Carter BloodCare reminds the community that even in the midst of a pandemic, it is still safe to donate blood and patients are counting on those donations.
Salas Minor Emergency Center will host a drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at 1655 NE Loop 286 in the parking lot on the Carter BloodCare bus. To receive information or to schedule an appointment, call Thomas Schleyer at 903-739-9191.

Dairy Queen supports blood center during times of instability, pandemic
HUGHES SPRINGS, Texas (December 27, 2020) – Giving blood includes four easy steps and it takes about an hour to complete a whole blood donation. It is safe to give blood, even in the midst of a pandemic.
This sounds simple, but nothing about 2020 is simple anymore. There is a surge in positive COVID-19 test results and hospitalizations; other surgeries and hospitalizations continue as well. There are hundreds of patients daily that will require blood transfusions. It is also true that the blood supply, locally and nationally, is more unstable than it has been in decades.
