The Martha s Vineyard Times MVRHS Class Night celebrates seniors’ accomplishments Students awarded over $1 million in scholarships. Graduates received over $1 million in scholarships at the awards ceremony Friday night. — Jeremy Driesen On Friday, Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School held its 62nd annual Class Night at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs. Many Island organizations came together to award the class of 2021. The 483 awards totaled $1,155,063. The night was a celebration of the students’ four years at MVRHS and a cheer for their futures. According to opening speaker and director of guidance John Fiorito, this was the first in-person event MVRHS held since the winter of 2020.

The Martha s Vineyard Times Edward L. Ciancio, 76, of East Derry, N.H., passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, May 23, 2021, at Parkland Medical Center after a period of declining health.  He was born Jan. 5, 1945, in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard. Ed was raised and educated on the Island. He was proud to serve in the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1967 during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he attended Burdett College and graduated with a degree in accounting. He spent his career working as an accountant for Nim-Cor, Ecco Shoe, and Spirit, among others.  Ed spent the past 36 years living in Derry, where he was actively involved in the local community. He served on the board of trustees for the Taylor Library, the Derry Sonshine Soup Kitchen, and Derry Little League. He coached and was an umpire for Little League for nearly 30 years. The year 2020 was the best and worst of times outdoors. With quarantined Americans driving at least 50 billion fewer miles, our air was markedly cleaner, clearer and healthier. While gun and alcohol sales soared, unprecedented numbers of us found our highs in the great outdoors. Suppliers of outdoor shoes and boots often ran out of stock. Local hunting and fishing triumphs were many, but environmental defeats were massive as global vision was far from 20/20. Our national leaders failed to constrain or even attempt to address climate change. Invaluable time was lost in stemming habitat exploitation and destruction.
