Staff writer STEUBENVILLE With U.S. approval of the first vaccine for COVID-19 late Friday and multiple vaccines completing successful trials, the focus all over the country and world is turning toward distribution. Locally, hospitals are preparing. In Ohio, Gov. Mike DeWine has laid out a phased plan for vaccine distribution, with limited early quantities meaning certain “critical populations” will get priority in receiving the vaccine first. In Phase 1 of Ohio’s plan, front line health care workers who care for COVID-19 patients and the “most at risk” will be the focus. According to Laurie Labishak, marketing director for Trinity Health System in Steubenville, the hospital has been preparing for the vaccine.

WHEELING Hundreds of essential workers in the Ohio Valley were honored with a meal Thursday as part of the annual “Honor Our Heroes” program, put together by the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple of Wheeling and Shiloh Apostolic Faith Assembly of Weirton. As part of the celebration, between 200 and 300 front line workers in the Wheeling and Weirton areas received spaghetti meals from Undo’s Restaurants or personal pizzas from Domino’s Pizza.

STEUBENVILLE Trinity Health System announces the expansion of its cardiology group to include two interventional cardiologists. Gregory Suero Abreu, M.D., and Triston Smith, M.D., who most recently practiced at Wheeling Hospital, have agreed to join the Trinity Health System family. What this means for the hospital’s cardiovascular program is the ability to offer a new service that is less invasive than open heart surgery. The best treatment option for people in need of aortic valve replacement is open-heart surgery, but for those at high risk opening the heart is too dangerous. Now there is hope; it’s called TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement. With TAVR, a pen-hole sized incision allows a new valve to be inserted through a catheter, providing a less invasive procedure that leads to faster recovery at home.
