Jan 27, 2021 Mae Elizabeth Lashway, age 96, formerly of Saranac Lake and currently of the Champlain Valley Senior Living Community in Willsboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh due to complications of COVID-19. Born in Saranac Lake on April 6, 1924, she was the daughter of George and Inez (Laggett) Baker. Mae married Arthur F. Lashway Jr. on Monday, Jan. 7, 1946, in Saranac Lake. He predeceased her on June 21, 1983. Mae had been a lifelong resident of Saranac Lake and had been employed as a secretary for the New York State Department of Health for many years. Prior to that she was employed with Adirondack Bank. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Saranac Lake Free Library for 30 years and continued to be an avid reader till the end.
Jan 26, 2021 Sandra Fobare, 60, of Saranac Lake passed over to becoming an angel for the Lord to receive on Jan. 24, 2021. Sandra is survived by her twin sister Susan Pratt, brother-in law Kevin Pratt, her “Little Sister” Debra Ratelle and “Big Sister” Linda Daunais, in honorary status. She also leaves behind her beloved cat Sweet Pea. Sandra was most recently employed with Amerigas for the past 15 years and prior to that Adirondack Bank for 10 years. She worked part-time for the Olympic Regional Development Authority as needed and, with her mother Katee Fobare, up “on the hill” for Howard Johnson’s/Comfort Inn for banquets.
Jan 23, 2021 Maurice “Jim” Derby, age 89, of Bloomingdale died Monday, Jan. 18, 2021, at Mercy Living Center in Tupper Lake. Born in Bloomingdale on Jan. 11, 1932, he was the son of Duke and Laura (Delcore) Derby. Jim was a lifelong resident of Bloomingdale and graduated from Saranac Lake High School. He worked in heavy construction for 10 years and later worked as a caretaker for the old Millbanks property in St. Regis Falls for over 30 years until his retirement. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. Being an avid outdoorsman, he was a member of the East Branch Hunting Club for many years.

Living with a pet during the coronavirus pandemic makes life more bearable and more fun for the entire family. Living without one, if you’re used to having a pet your whole life, can make the days more mundane and less lively. That makes the decision of whether to get a pet this Christmas more important than usual. Each Christmas season, children (and a few adults) across the country include in their requests to Santa a dog, cat, rabbit or other living creature. They want a lovable, cuddly pet. They promise they will feed it, walk it, clean up after it, take it to the vet and love it. They have no idea how much that will cost, or how much time and attention that will mean … they just want a pet.
