December 14, 2020 The thought behind the move is that whenever there is an incident of serious injury or custodial death in a police station or an investigating agency, a person can complain about the same to Human Rights Courts which can then summon the CCTV footage for safe-keeping. Such footage shall be made available to the victims in the event of violation of her human rights. A bench headed by Justice R F Nariman has directed that states and Union Territories (UTs) should ensure that CCTV cameras are installed at each and every police station, making them imperative at all entry and exit points, main gate, all lock-ups, all corridors, lobby and reception area as also areas outside the lock-up room. The apex court had in 2018 ordered installation of CCTV cameras in police stations to check human rights abuses.
