(Washington, DC) – Today, at a White House meeting with President Biden and leaders from across the nation to discuss gun crime reduction strategies, Mayor Muriel Bowser shared the District’s comprehensive plan to reduce gun violence. The Mayor also advocated for federal support of amendments to the District’s bifurcated judicial system to improve public safety outcomes. Following the meeting, the Mayor released the following statement.
“We know ending the scourge of gun violence requires every level of government working together to get illegal guns off our streets, hold people accountable when they choose to use guns in our communities, and prevent violence by creating opportunity for those who need it. In DC, we are making historic investments in not just a whole-of-government approach to reducing gun violence, but a whole-of-community approach – in evidence-based strategies to prevent violence and expand opportunity. President Joe Biden announced six executive actions today aimed at addressing gun violence in America. The White House is calling the issue a public health epidemic.
Steps taken by the Biden-Harris Administration come amid daily gun violence that’s leaving trauma nationwide. Last month alone, there were mass shootings in Colorado that killed 10 people, and in Georgia, eight were slain, including six women of Asian descent.
Even amid the COVID-19 pandemic, cities across the country are experiencing a historic spike in homicides.
“The idea that we have so many people dying every single day from gun violence in America is a blemish on our character as a nation,” said Biden, speaking from the White House on Thursday morning.
Mayor Bowser recognizes gun violence as a public health crisis, launches prevention program
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser signed a Mayor’s Order recognizing gun violence as a public health crisis and announced the creation of an emergency gun violence prevention center at a situational update on Feb. 17.
The order comes as a response to a spike in gun violence in D.C. last year and establishes the Gun Violence Prevention Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which is part of a new gun violence prevention program known as Building Blocks DC. According to the situational update presentation, while violent crimes from 2016 to 2020 have generally gone down, gun crime trends have gone up. 922 people were shot in D.C. last year, and 198 people were killed. Acts of gun violence and homicides disproportionately impacted the Black community. In 2020, 95 percent of homicide victims were Black, and 160 of the 198 homicide victims were Black men.
