In his House Resolution No. 1470, the House Chief expressed the Lower Chamber’s condolences on the demise Lapeña-Bonifacio, who was tagged as “Grande Dame of Southeast Asian Children’s Theater” and “Mother of Philippine Puppetry.”
The multi-awarded playwright, author, puppeteer and educator died on December 29, 2020 at the age of 90.
“Lapeña-Bonifacio’s immense talent, artistry and passion for children’s literature, puppetry and theater made a profound impact on Philippine arts and culture, and her life and work will undoubtedly continue to inspire countless generation of artists to hone their craft and create new avenues to further explore and enrich our country’s culture, literature and tradition,” the resolution read.

Best known for her work with puppets and childrenâs theater, National Artist for Theater Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio died on Dec. 29. This was announced by Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas, the theater group she had founded, through a Facebook post.
âIt is with great sadness that we announce the passing of National Artist Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio, University of the Philippines Professor Emeritus and Founding Artistic Director of Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas at 7 a.m. today, Dec. 29, 2020 at the age of 90,â said the post. Lapeña-Bonifacio founded Teatrong Mulat in 1977 as a childrenâs theater and puppet theater company.

National Artist for Theater Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio died on Tuesday, December 29. She was 90 years old.
The news of her death was confirmed by the Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas, where she was the founding artistic director. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of National Artist Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio, University of the Philippines Professor Emeritus and Founding Artistic Director of Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas at 7 AM today, December 29, 2020 at the age of 90, the company announced.
Details of the wake have yet to be announced.
Before her death, Bonifacio was a professor and a member of the Board Advisors of the University of the Philippines College of Arts and Letters– Institute of Creative Writing.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 29) Renowned playwright Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio, National Artist for Theater, died on Tuesday, the National Commission for the Culture and Arts confirmed. She was 90.
Born on April 4, 1930, she died at 7 a.m. Her family did not release details of her passing.
Her wake will be held at the Imperial Classic, Ground Floor, of Funeraria Paz in Quezon City on Wednesday and Thursday. Viewing hours willl only be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the NCCA said.
