City of Carlsbad update: Understanding the merger of ConocoPhillips and Concho Resources
Dale Janway
On Tuesday, we had a great online discussion with Josh Viets, the Vice President of the Delaware Basin with ConocoPhillips, as well as other employees with ConocoPhillips. ConocoPhillips recently completed a merger with Concho Resources Inc., who has had a major presence in Eddy County for a long time. This merger, as well as COVID-19 shutdown issues and new regulations, meant there were a lot of questions about the future.
Viets did an excellent job answering those questions and providing us with some reassurance as to the company’s involvement in Carlsbad and Eddy County. He pointed out that the low carbon intensity of the oil in our area, as well as the high quality of rock, will continue to make our region very appealing. As pressure increases on environmental issues, the area’s low carbon intensity will especially play a major role.
City of Carlsbad: Working on smooth transition from NMSU Carlsbad
Dale Janway
At some point in the next few weeks, you may receive a call from someone wanting to ask you a few questions about Carlsbad’s college going independent. This is not a scam call or any solicitation- a community survey about the college is an important part of the upcoming transition into Southeast New Mexico College. We encourage you to participate in this survey and share your feelings on this issue. Your answers will help our college, our higher education task force, and the state’s Higher Education Department all formulate a plan for a smooth transition. We certainly appreciate ideas about what classes and services can be offered by the new college and look forward to these future opportunities.

The survey can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LT3GTKZ. The survey asks local business to identify what training and educational needs their employees have.
It also asks respondents to identify the best platforms for employee education and training, from online courses to webinars and certification programs.
New Mexico State University (NMSU) Carlsbad s transition to the Southeast New Mexico College begins July 1, 2021, following the signing of House Bill 212 by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham which creates a pathway for the transition.
