Overview The Huron River is considered to be the cleanest urban river in Michigan.  Much of the credit for this status goes to the Huron River Watershed Council (HRWC) and those who saw the need for the river’s protection.  Even though HRWC has no enforcement powers, they have accomplished their goals through the use of technical data, factual information and citizen stewardship to influence decisions made by various local agencies, businesses, and individuals. The HRWC’s work reached back to 1956, a time when Ann Arbor was expanding and pollution in the Huron River was already a growing problem.  For over 5o years, HRWC has served as a common ground where stakeholders come together to discuss collaboration and coordination between local units of government, businesses, and citizens on water management policies and programs. Throughout the years, these discussions have resulted in reports that governments and agencies have used to direct policies such as wellhead protection

Clinton Township hires new assistant finance director. Clinton Township hires new assistant finance director CLINTON TOWNSHIP – Jessica Leija, has been promoted to assistant director of finance for Clinton Township. Leija has worked as an accountant for the Township’s Budget and Finance Department for more than eight years. She replaces Mary Hein, who became finance director in June 2020. “Mrs. Leija has played an integral role on our team since 2012,” said Hein. “During that time, she has demonstrated her knowledge of all aspects of the department by assisting with the annual audit, preparation of the budget, grant administration, and other daily responsibilities,” she said.

More than half of Dearborn police arrests are Black people

Dearborn police are arresting Black suspects and issuing citations to them at significantly higher rates compared with white suspects, prompting protests from a group of activists who are calling upon Dearborn to reduce spending on police and crack down on what they see as racist targeting.  The city of 94,000 that s the headquarters of Ford Motor Co. has seen an intense debate in recent months as members of a new group called Accountability for Dearborn, formed last year after George Floyd s death, have increasingly spoken out at Dearborn City Council meetings. Floyd died on May 25 in Minneapolis in an incident with a police officer, prompting widespread protests and calls for reform of police across the U.S., including in metro Detroit.
