The work is a product of two people, Northern Illinois University history professor Sean Farrell, and his former doctoral student Mathieu Billings, who now works at the University of Indianapolis. Farrell said a key motivation behind the book, and its title, was to broaden the scope by which people see “The Irish in Illinois.”
“The time seemed right to put it together in terms of the first statewide history of the Irish in Illinois, he said. There’s been a lot of great stuff on the Irish in Chicago and a lot of good things on the Irish in various communities, but there hasn’t been anything that kind of brought that all together.”

Colleges and universities across the state are betting on a more complete return to in-person learning this fall, but itâs not clear if those plans will come to fruition at this stage of the pandemic.
The University of Illinois System â with campuses in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield â announced Tuesday that it anticipates the majority of classes and labs to be held face to face next school year.
Noting exceptions for larger lecture-based courses, which will continue to be offered online, system President Tim Killeen pointed to increased COVID-19 testing and rising vaccine supply as key factors that support the decision.

(SPRINGFIELD) Congratulations to an area student who last week finished strong during the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Collegiate Discussion Meet. It was over the course of three days that Taylor Hartke of Teutopolis discussed topics impacting agriculture, such as big data and international trade, plus her third and final round discussion on broadband infrastructure. Although the junior at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, majoring in agricultural communications with a minor in agribusiness economics, did not advance to the final four competitors, the Effingham County native did finish among to top sixteen.
