They call it black gold. Texas tea. But Texas wasn’t the only state to dominate America’s oil industry. Illinois was once one of the highest oil-producing states in the country, and, for a time, the world.
Oil speculators looked to Illinois as early as the 1860s and found some success in the early 1900s. But the real boom began Jan. 27, 1937, when the Adams Oil and Gas company struck oil on Glenn Merryman’s farm in Marion County, setting off a southern Illinois oil boom that lasted half a century.
Mentoring and meeting needs Michael Phelon started The Outlet mentoring program in 2004. It s located on South 12th Street, though this year, the 30 mentors are mostly connecting with youth remotely. The program serves 48 youth from in and around Springfield with a focus on boys and young men from fatherless households. This year, Phelon has seen an enormous amount of personal loss. His mother and uncle died, as did his mentor, Dr. Clarice Ford, and his right-hand man at The Outlet, Marcus Butler Sr. It s been rough for us. EDWARDSVILLE - The Madison County Board Wednesday approved the appointment of Dr. John W. Stirton to the Madison County Mental Health Board, replacing Walter Hunter, whose term expired Dec. 31, 2019.
Judy Kuhn and Michael “Doc” Holiday voted no.
Holiday attempted to make a comment about Hunter, but Chairman Kurt Prenzler said only comments about the appointee were allowed. Malone said he had not have problem with Stirton but would have liked to make a comment about Hunter. Kuhn said Hunter did a good job.
Stirton lives and practices in Alton. He is an orthopedic surgeon who has been licensed in Illinois and practicing in Madison County at both BJC and OSF facilities for the past seven years.
