Earlier this month I received some news from a couple I know in B.C. that Darin was finally going to receive a donated kidney and the donor was his spouse Val. I was ecstatic for them and overwhelmed with the “love” that was evident in this gift. As it turned out it was very timely news and prompted the content of this column.
The week of April 18th to 24th is National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness week. The reality of donation and transplantation today is that approximately 4,500 Canadians are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant and many more are waiting for tissue transplants. The sad truth is that on average, 250 Canadians die each year waiting.
