South-East doesn’t want war, secession – Umahi speaks on Biafra agitation

The Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, spoke on Thursday at the State House during a briefing.
Umahi described the situation in the South-East as a “mixture of reality, fake news and war propaganda”.
He admitted there are genuine complaints in the zone but that the agitations are now “turned violent” and have been “hijacked”.
“In the South-East, we don’t want war, we don’t want to secede, we want to be a part of a fair Nigeria where justice, equity and freedom exist.”
Umahi reiterated his call for dialogue to resolve differences and strengthen cooperation as a people.

Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, says the South-East geopolitical zone does not want war, adding that the region also does not want to leave Nigeria.
Umahi, who is also the Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, stated this on Thursday at Aso Villa in Abuja during the weekly State House Briefing.
He lamented that “the situation in the South-East is a mixture of reality, fake news and war propaganda”.
“Are there rightful agitations in the South-East? Yes. Has it turned violent? Yes. It’s been hijacked,” he said.

A special operation in the southeast geopolitical zone, named “Operation Restore Peace (Operation RP),” was on Tuesday launched in Enugu by the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, with the aim of curbing the trending violence and criminal activities in the zone.
Launching the operation, IGP Baba, said it was being carried out in accordance with President Muhammadu Buhari’s order to the Nigeria Police Force to restore peace and stability in the region.

The Police Chief added that the President’s directive was not only for the South East but also across the nation, stressing that there is urgent need to secure lives and property of residents of the country.
