The acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, on Tuesday, in Enugu, launched a special operation for the South East geo-political zone, code-named “Operation Restore Peace (Operation RP)”, to stem the tide of violence and criminal activities in the zone.
Launching the operation, IGP Baba disclosed that the campaign was in compliance with the directive given to the Nigeria Police, by President Muhammadu Buhari, to restore peace and security in the zone.
The Police Chief added that the President’s directive was not only for the South East but also across the nation, stressing that there is urgent need to secure lives and property of residents of the country.

The Nigerian Army and the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday, disagreed over the alleged deployment of northern commanders to south-east and south-south with the Igbo group frowning at the shoot-at-sight order given to Nigerian soldiers on Igbo youths.
Ohanaeze warned that Nigerian government should learn a lesson from history by not fighting an unwinnable war against nationalism, advising the Buhari- led government to “seek possible peaceful options that are the only solution that guarantees national unity and peaceful coexistence”.
Chairman, South-East Governors’ Forum and Ebonyi State Governor, Chief David Umahi, yesterday, said his government was ready to negotiate with unknown gunmen and empower them only if they are ready to turn a new leaf and repent.
The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, has said that any herdsman coming to the South-East must conform to the culture of the people in the region.
Umahi, who is also the Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, said herdsmen must stop any further killings of the innocent people of the zone.
He made this known at the weekend while addressing a mammoth crowd of believers, stakeholders and political leaders of the state during the ground finale of the 7 days praying and fasting organized by the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Ebonyi State chapter, which took place at the ecumenical centre Abakaliki.
