Concern South Canterbury may miss out with abolition of DHBs

John Bisset/Stuff Former South Canterbury District chairman Murray Cleverley is surprised the Government is disestablishing all the district health boards. (File photo) Cleverley, who said other centralised services such as Police worked quite well, was concerned smaller areas such as South Canterbury would become the poor relation as the budget would gravitate to the largest areas. “Over the last 20 years the SCDHB has been effective and efficient, it stayed in the black and has amazing staff . it’s a slap to them to be disestablished.” Under the new model he thought it would harder to get community buy-in, such as the fundraising for Timaru Hospital’s MRI scanner, as people were less likely to fundraise for a national organisation.

The number of people intentionally self-harming in South Canterbury has increased markedly over the last five years, peaking in 2019, with more young people being seen. Community Mental Health charge nurse manager Jacquie Keene said self-harm was a complex issue, and they were seeing more younger people in recent years – some still at primary school. She said the practice was increasing among males and those who were gender fluid were more likely to harm themselves because of their distress over who they were.
