DUBAI, United Arab Emirates A South Korean oil tanker held for months by Iran amid a dispute over billions of dollars seized by Seoul left port early Friday after the ship and its captain were released, just hours ahead of further talks between Tehran and world powers over its tattered nuclear deal.

Hankuk Chemi and its captain on Friday, after South Korea promised to try to secure the release of $7 billion in Iranian funds frozen in South Korean banks by US sanctions. The Naval Command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps seized the ship in the Strait of Hormuz off Oman and detained its captain in January, claiming it had done so “over oil pollution and environmental hazards,” a charge that the South Korean government denies.

Iranian authorities released the South Korean ship Hankuk Chemi and its captain, the South Korean Foreign Ministry announced on Friday. The oil tanker had been seized by Iranian forces in January near the Strait of Hormuz, as the vessel was traveling from Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates. The captain and sailors are in good health and it s been confirmed the ship and its cargoes had no problems, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The ship departed Iran after completing administrative procedures.
