S-193 Boat Lock on Lake Okeechobee s North Shore - Closing at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 5.

To alleviate potential flooding from Elsa, water management gets region ready Tags: Officials prepare to prevent flooding in South Florida when hurricanes loom HIALEAH, Fla. – As the first named hurricane of the 2021 season and Elsa continued to intensify on approach, the South Florida Water Management District was getting the region ready. To mitigate against flooding, the district was working to bring the water level down in canals in coordination with local drainage districts. The work was already underway, explained Randy Smith, given this week’s relentless rainfall. “So, our flood control system has already been working pretty hard trying to push a lot of the storm water out into the ocean to lower the water in the canals in anticipation of potentially heavy rainfall from Elsa,” Smith said.
