A plan to release water from Lake Okeechobee has been delayed, after highly toxic algae was discovered near Port Mayaca, on the eastern side of the lake.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had planned to do discharges in short bursts over an eight hour period on Wednesday to study the impacts of releases ahead of hurricane season.
The South Florida Water Management District requested that the releases not take place while the algae is present.
There are concerns that there could be a repeat of the 2018 toxic algae crisis.
