‘No announcement on revoking freeze on DA’ It is a budget encouraging privatisation of public sector units, according to Southern Railway Mazdoor Union.
In a statement, its assistant divisional secretary V. Ramkumar said that the Union Budget was anti-labourers. Implementation of the budgetary proposals would do away with the Life Insurance Corporation. The new Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess on fuel would lead to price rise. However, there was no guarantee that the funds mobilised through the tax would benefit the farmers.
Central Government employees were disappointed as there was no announcement on revoking the freeze on dearness allowance, he said.

MADURAI: Southern Railway has revoked the cancellation of the Tejas Superfast Express train which runs from Madurai to Chennai Egmore and Chennai Egmore to Madurai.
Earlier, the Southern Railway had cancelled the Train no.02613/02614 Tejas Superfast Express train which is plying from Chennai Egmore to Madurai and Madurai to Chennai Egmore from January 5 due to poor patronage of passengers.

CHENNAI: At a time when the Indian Railways is reeling under severe staff crunch, the national transporter has decided to engage its regular employees as an alternative for dak khalasis or ‘bungalow peons’, who were assigned to do household chores at the officers’ residences. This seems to be a puzzling detour for the transporter that is attempting to usher in “modernity” in services and infrastructure through privatisation.
The rampant and illegal engagement of regular railway staff for doing household chores at officers’ houses, has been for the first time allowed ‘officially’ by the Railway Board, the apex body of Indian Railways. The railway employee unions have strongly objected to the move and dubbed this as an attempt to legitimise misuse of railway staff.

Protest against long working hours violating safety norms
Railway gatekeepers on Madurai-Kovilpatti broad gauge section reported sick
en masse on Wednesday. They complained of fatigue caused by extended hours of work.
Senior railway officials held talks with their representatives and promised to settle their demand in a week’s time. Following the assurance, the gatekeepers returned to work.
The protest started with the gatekeepers reporting at Railway Hospital in Madurai and Virudhunagar, seeking that they be allowed to take sick leave
Railway authorities clarified that they have not received any official request from the private firm to operate the train daily, nor have they given such permission
COIMBATORE: Even as protests against private chartering of the Nilgiri Mountain Rail continue, private operator Homemade Group-TN-43 announced daily trips from January.
Pictures of a flex board advertising the trips in front of the group’s bakery at Karamadai circulated on WhatsApp on Wednesday.
When railway employees brought this to their notice, railway authorities clarified that permission has not been given to the operator to conduct the service. They also instructed the operator to remove the advertisements.
