Local Gem: Is There a Museum Restaurant Capable of Nourishing Body and Soul? May 9, 2021 11:30 am | Add a comment | 37 reads As we reported earlier this week, Beijing is certainly a world leader when it comes to museums. Not only is it home to a large amount of them, but it also boasts the second-most visited in the world – the National Museum of China – meaning our fair capital sure has a flourishing diversity of cultural vaults. And despite a pandemic that threatened to deal a fatal blow to some of them, Beijing’s museums came out the other side stronger than ever with a variety of exhibitions ranging from the new archaeologic discoveries of Sanxingdui to the precious Ukiyoe collection, and even rock samples freshly transported from the surface of the moon. What’s interesting about museums though, is that for all the cultural treasures they house, their cafes tend to be wholly bland or overpriced and gimmicky. Which leaves one

Although China Ranks 15th for Most Amount of Museums, Beijing Is Home to the Second-Most Visited

Although China Ranks 15th for Most Amount of Museums, Beijing Is Home to the Second-Most Visited May 7, 2021 8:30 am | Add a comment | 43 reads Earlier this year, Statista published a number of statistics sourced from UNESCO about the countries with the largest number of museums, and those that attracted the largest number of visitors, annually. More recently, that data was picked up by the folks over at studyinginswitzerland.com (check out the full article for more number-crunching), who compiled it into some fancy little infographics which reveal a couple of interesting tidbits about China, and Beijing, specifically. As of May 2020, China was home to 1,030 museums, earning it the 15th spot on a list of 20 countries with the most museums. While it may be a far cry from the US’s first-place rank of 33,082, it’s worth noting that even second-place Germany and third-place Japan are nowhere near reaching that first-place status, with

Housing ancient artefacts, artwork from all regions of the world and technology and natural science that have revolutionised the way we understand the world around us. Museums offer us a glimpse into the past through thoughtfully curated exhibits. From the vast collection of Egyptian antiques, ancient Greek and Roman sculptures at the Louvre in Paris to the 2 000-piece collection of contemporary art at The Broad in Los Angeles, people travel from far and wide to immerse themselves in the enriching experiences that museums have to offer.

Canada ranks in top 10 for most number of museums worldwide

A new study finds that Canada has the ninth-highest number of museums worldwide.  Studying in Switzerland gathered data from UNESCO, Statista and other sources on countries with the most museums, the most visited museums in the world, and the decrease of visitors in major art museums in 2020 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The study finds that Canada is ninth globally for its number of museums, with 2112 of them in total. However, none of these museums place on the list of most visited museums worldwide. The United States has the most museums in the world, with a total of 33,098 museums. That said, they are not the most visited. In contrast, London s museums make up a quarter of the most visited museums across the globe.

Museum workers worldwide lose jobs, income—many plan to leave field

Museum workers worldwide lose jobs, income many plan to leave field On April 13, the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) made public the findings of a survey, “Measuring the Impact of COVID-19 on People in the Museum Field,” conducted in March. Some 2,700 individuals responded, 87 percent of them (pre-pandemic) museum staff in the US. Unsurprisingly, the results paint a picture of economic hardship, professional uncertainty and mental turmoil. The more precarious a given respondent’s position in the field, generally speaking, the greater the financial loss (as a percentage of previous income) and the deeper the skepticism about the future. Forty-three percent of museum workers as a whole saw their income fall by an average of 31 percent over the course of 2020. More than 60 percent of part-time staff, already living at poverty levels, testify to “having lost income due to the pandemic, with a median of eight thousand dollars lost due to reduced salary, benefits, or hours fo
