Marine Corps snipers struck fear in the hearts of their enemies in the jungles of Vietnam. The exploits of three sharpshooters, in particular, are legendary.
Charles “Chuck” Mawhinney, Eric England, and Carlos Hathcock combined had almost 300 confirmed kills and even more unconfirmed. They were masters of their craft. Their skills in battle, as well as their silent professionalism and humility, made these men examples for the Marine snipers that followed.
“The Marines who go forward and work to put 120 percent into it and let their accolades speak for themselves are the guys that we encourage [Marine snipers] to emulate,” Staff Sgt. Joshua Coulter, a Marine Corps Scout Sniper instructor, recently told Insider.

James R. Stabley, of Montoursville, received his angel wings on Dec. 13, 2020. He was born on Sept. 11, 1944 to the late Elmer R. Stabley and Elizabeth J. (Mitstifer) Stabley in Williamsport.
He attended Loyalsock Elementary and Junior high school, but attended Williamsport High School aviation program and graduated from the class of 1962.
He proudly served in the U.S.M.C. from 1962 to 1966, including a tour in Vietnam as a crew chief on helicopters giving direct support to the fighting units on the ground in the form of rescue missions and medical evacuations.
Following his military service, Jim attended W.A.C.C., (now Penn College) taking the Aviation Course, while working at Avco Lycoming.
