Over the last week I have felt like I was working in an upside down office as I tried to make sense of the bewildering landscape Scottish cultural venues and festivals have found themselves in.
The good news is that a reopening date of 17 May is firmly on the horizon. Attractions like the National Museum of Scotland, Kelvingrove and V&A Dundee have already returned, along with bars, restaurants and hotels. A return to normality is a real prospect for many.
Imagine then how it must have felt to be a venue manager or a festival organiser when long-awaited guidelines for the return of live events delievered a hammer blow that all venues must have two metre social distancing in place.
Archie Brennan (1931-2009), tapestry artist, formative director of Edinburgh’s Dovecot Studio’s modern era, and sometime pop artist of the textile world, was an innovator whose prolific output belied a life spent teaching and promoting tapestry worldwide. Well known amongst tapestry aficionados, his light faded at home when he left Scotland in the 1970s to pursue his passion for tapestry abroad. Innovatively using photographic and mass media for images for his work, including those of Muhammad Ali and Princess Diana, and questioning the notion that a weaver should only copy paintings, he packed up his portable loom and travelled the world, a long way from his Edinburgh origins just half a mile from the Dovecot’s original studios in Corstorphine.
Scots museum to ask Martin Compston for iconic Line of Duty waistcoat to display after tweet goes viral
The National Museum of Scotland tweeted saying they would ask Martin if they could put one of the garments in the national collection if they gained more than 1,000 retweets - and it quickly surpassed that number.
