The House of Representatives’ Committee on Finance has queried the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Mohammed Sambo, over how the scheme had been spending its resources, particularly during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.

Lawmakers in the health sector say they have begun a review of the country’s health sector with a view to strengthening it with requisite laws following the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The legislators say the Nigerian healthcare system has been tested and tried by the emerging pandemic as well as the financial setbacks in the country, making it expedient to seek solutions from the angle of law and implementation.
The lawmakers made the assertions at the Annual Legislative Summit on Health, which focused on Universal Health Coverage and Health Security.
They explained that the National Assembly is amending laws to ensure that the health sector serves the nation as it should.
Studies have shown that over 70 per cent of people in Sub-Saharan Africa have mobile phones; that’s huge. That shows us that it is an important resource that we can tap into in our environment.
Mobile phone technology has been used for both infectious and non-infectious diseases. It does not just shorten delays, but has also been used in improving adherence.
So using mobile technology is here to stay and is really an important resource that can be used in improving health outcomes in Nigeria.

On March 31 2021, Members of Parliament passed the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Bill, which seeks to provide universal healthcare to all Ugandans.
However, before its’ passing, the State Minister of Health Robinah Nabbanja had said the Bill in its current state needed to be withdrawn pending consultations from stakeholders. Instead of withdrawing the Bill, the Minister ought to have asked for some more time before Parliament considers the Bill.

Surprise and disbelief greeted the faces of members of the House of Representatives yesterday who became livid with the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS for spending N152,487,900 on the procurement of face/nose masks, hand sanitizers, protective wears, and hand gloves during COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
Outside this figure, the Scheme also expends at least N2, 480, 000 on diesel on monthly basis for its head office in Utako, Abuja, and office annex in Wuse 11, Abuja.
