Translators in the UK Call for Racial Equality in Literary Translation
The UK’s Translators Association issues a statement on debates about who should translate whom–and ‘institutional barriers.’

There are several prompts to this newly enunciated stance, and we’ll talk through them to help explicate the issues.
Briefly, the translators are writing to two points deeply important to workers across all the creative industries, fully inclusive of both international book publishing and literary translation.
First, they argue that anyone can translate anyone. That is to say, the rejection of one or another translator based on a factor such as race is, they say, unacceptable. Amanda Gorman continues to break new ground and impress with a year of firsts.
The Harvard graduate and National Youth Poet Laureate, 23, was the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, the first poet to write and perform an original poem for the Super Bowl, and now her book, The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem for the Country, is the first book of poetry to debut at No. 1 on USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list. And not just debut, but the first book of poetry to even claim the top spot on the list since its inception in October 1993.

Vogue after gaining national recognition as the inaugural poet.
On Wednesday, the fashion magazine announced on social media that the 23-year-old poet had been chosen for
Vogue’s May issue, making her the first-ever poet to be featured on the cover.
“@TheAmandaGorman is our May cover star! Poet, activist, optimist, style icon - Gorman has become so much more than a literary star. Meet the phenomenon in the making,” the outlet announced on Twitter.
The issue features two covers, both of which were shot by photographer Annie Leibovitz and styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, with one featuring Gorman dressed in a bright green, orange and red Louis Vuitton Kente gown by Virgil Abloh.
