Washington – Amanda Gorman has become the youngest poet ever to perform at a presidential inauguration, calling for “unity and togetherness” in her self-penned poem.
The 22-year-old delivered her work
The Hill We Climb to both the dignitaries present in Washington DC and a watching global audience.
“When day comes, we ask ourselves where can we find light in this never-ending shade?” her five-minute poem began.
She went on to reference the storming of the Capitol earlier this month.
“We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it, would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy,” she declared.

Approximately 39.9 million people tuned in to watch Joe Biden and Kamala Harris be sworn into office on Wednesday on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC and Fox News Channel, according to TV Line. CNN s coverage of the swearing in ceremony had the largest audience with 9.9 million folks tuning in, meanwhile Fox News Channel saw had a total of 2.7 million people watching. This inauguration had the largest television audience since Barack Obama s in 2009 at 38 million views.
This year s inauguration looked very different than in years past due to the coronavirus pandemic. Typically, thousands of people would gather on the National Mall to watch the event. However, people were encouraged to tune in at home to celebrate Biden s first day on the job.

At 22 years old, the Los Angeles native became the youngest inaugural poet ever as she recited her original work “The Hill We Climb,” a poem completed Jan. 6 following the violent attempted siege of the United States Capitol. Today, exactly two weeks later, Gorman stood at the podium to deliver those words in front of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris the first Black and South Asian woman to ever hold the post former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and stars like Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga.

NEW YORK (AP) The country has a new president and a new literary star. In one of the inauguration’s most talked about moments, poet Amanda Gorman summoned images dire and triumphant Wednesday as she called out to the world “even as we grieved, we grew.”
The 22-year-old Gorman referenced everything from Biblical scripture to “Hamilton,” and at times echoed the oratory of John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. With urgency and assertion she began by asking “Where can we find light/In this never-ending shade?” and used her own poetry and life story as an answer.
