Medical amnesty for students in alcohol abuse crises saves lives (opinion)

Istock/erhui1979 When I left home for college, I went about as far from rural Arizona as possible without actually leaving the country. At 18 years old, I packed my life into a single suitcase and boarded a one-way flight to Boston. My mom was terrified. I’d be alone in a strange new place, and I know she wondered, would I make any friends? Would I struggle in class? My mom can be pretty overprotective, so I’m sure she considered most challenges I might face. But I doubt she ever imagined me slumped on the floor, bleeding, drunk and slurring to my friends, “Please don’t call campus medical services!”

Amphetamine Abuse: Who is at Risk?

Email People dealing with mental health issues at the same time that they are taking a prescription have a greater chance of becoming addicted to amphetamines. If you or a family member takes prescription amphetamines to treat a condition such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or narcolepsy, it s necessary to do so with caution. The risks of amphetamine abuse and even addiction are substantial.  According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), when taken correctly, prescription stimulants like dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), dextroamphetamine/amphetamine combination product (Adderall), and methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) increase your alertness, attention, and energy. But in the 2019 National Survey of Drug Use and Health, 9.7 million Americans said they misused stimulants in the last year. Another two million people admitted misuse of methamphetamine, a powerful and highly addictive stimulant.

Austin orders quality of life study to gauge LGBTQIA needs, inequities

A city-commissioned LGBTQIA+ Quality of Life Study is taking the pulse of Austin s LGBTQ population in hopes of informing policy proposals crafted to address inequality facing the community in areas such as health care, housing and public safety. More than 600 people responded to the study s survey in the first two weeks after its release Jan. 22, according to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Quality of Life Advisory Commission. The survey is expected to run until April 30. Victor Martinez, chair of the commission, said when the panel first met in 2017, the members saw a blind spot in past city demographic and quality of life surveys because they did not ask questions about gender identity and sexual orientation.

Psychoactive Drugs Are Misused Most In Young People

Psychoactive Drugs Are Misused Most In Young People by Pooja Shete on  February 4, 2021 at 5:02 PM An analysis of national survey responses suggests that nearly a third of US teens and young adults prescribed a psychoactive drug misuse that drug. The likelihood of misusing these drugs increases with age. The findings indicate that stimulants and tranquillizers were more likely to be misused than opioids. The study is published in the online journal Family Medicine & Community Health. In the US, drug overdose is a leading cause of unintentional death and most of the cases involve opioid painkillers, but not all. Data available on the misuse of other prescription psychoactive drugs are few and each year more than 1 in 3 teens and young adults in the US are prescribed one of these drugs. The researchers used the responses of 110,556 US 12-25 year olds who took part in the 2015-2018 National Survey of Drug Use and Health Sampling.
