Local families speak out against transgender legislation

Heights resident Anna Eastman, a former Houston ISD trustee and former state representative, said she cannot remember a time when there were so many proposed state laws that would negatively impact the transgender community. The so-called “bathroom bill” was in the 2017 Texas Legislature session and did not pass. This year, however, Equality Texas – a political advocacy organization that advocates for LGBTQ+ rights – has identified more than 10 bills it says target transgender youth and families. In the past few weeks, bills that would ban gender-affirming healthcare for youth and prohibit youth participation in sports that align with a transgender person’s preferred identity have been moving through the House and Senate.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t change the fact that our nation is mired in a terrible vicious cycle right now in which people of color – usually, but not always, young men – are being repeatedly and wrongfully killed or terrorized by white cops. The recent killing of Andrew Brown Jr. by Pasquotank County sheriff’s deputies – just days after the conviction of Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd and the deaths of Daunte Wright and Ma’Khia Bryant – is just the latest in what seems like a never-ending series.

Espinoza honored with Social Worker of the Year award

Espinoza honored with Social Worker of the Year award submitted Alice Independent School District s social worker was recently honored with the Social Worker of the Year award by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Angel C. Espinoza, licensed master social worker and school social worker, serves as the School Social Worker for the School Climate Transformation Grant at Alice ISD. Espinoza has been employed by Alice ISD since 2016. He received his Bachelor of Social Work Degree in 2016 and his Master of Social Work Degree in 2019 from Texas A&M University – Kingsville. In 2020, he was an honorable mention recipient for the Kathy Armenta Texas School Social Worker of the Year Award.
