Stakeholders Recommend Varied Sources Of Funding For Free SHS, Pre-Tertiary Education

Dr Steve Manteaw, the Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative, has asked the government not to overly depend on natural resource revenue as a source of funding education. He said the government needed to redirect its attention to other sectors for funds to sustain the free Senior High School (SHS) policy. He said over-reliance on natural resource revenues, especially petroleum funds, could be risky on account of the volatile nature of commodity prices. The mining sector, he explained, had some potentials to contribute to secondary education financing and advised that corporate social responsibility spending be re-directed to education.

Review Free SHS - NAGRAT Proposes

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has called for a national stakeholder engagement to analyse and review the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy. That, it said, was to improve upon the system. “The fact is Free SHS policy goes beyond the payment or non-payment of fees, but also the survival of the general school system, the President of NAGRAT, Mr Eric Agbe-Carbonu, said at a press conference in Accra yesterday ahead of the May Day celebrations. He said while there was no doubt about the benefits of Free SHS, it was important to improve upon its delivery, thus a stakeholders’ engagement was one of the key ways of discussing the issue on a non-partisan basis with the aim of finding a solution to achieve the object of that policy without putting one party, in this case, the schools, at a disadvantage.
