NEW DELHI: The ministry of tourism has engaged the National Council of Applied Economic Research to conduct a study on “India and Coronavirus Pandemic: Economic Losses for households engaged in tourism and policies for recovery”, and with the situation still evolving, the results of the study are awaited, Union tourism and culture minister Prahlad Patel has said. Patel was responding in Lok Sabha to questions on the impact of the pandemic on tourism and the resultant job losses, raised by Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Karti Chidambaram, Kerala Congress (M)’s Thomas Chazhikadan, and BJD’s Bhartruhari Mahtab. The minister said international arrivals fell by about 97% in the period between December 2019 and 2020, with only 470 international arrivals in April 2020 as compared to 7.74 lakh in April 2019, and 79,910 in December 2020 as compared to 12.26 lakh international arrivals in December 2019.
