In 2006, Randy Lavespere, a Louisiana doctor, was convicted of buying $8,000 of methamphetamine in a Home Depot parking lot with intent to distribute. He served two years in prison, and his medical license was revoked. But even though he had been convicted of a felony and barred from practicing medicine in most circumstances, he was allowed to treat patients in at least one setting: Louisiana state prisons.
In November 2009, just one month after the Louisiana State Medical Board reinstated his medical license and put him on indefinite probation, Lavespere was hired as a physician at the largest maximum security prison in the country, Louisiana State Penitentiary better known as Angola, after the plantation on which it was built. Lavespere rose through the ranks at the prison, becoming the institution’s medical director in November 2014, less than three weeks after his license was fully reinstated. The most recent tense event between law enforcement and the community was the death of Andrew Brown Jr., who was shot five times in Elizabeth City by Pasquotank County Sheriff s Office deputies while they were serving an arrest warrant. Brown s death has sparked protests and calls for accountability by activists.

In a measure that will save Union County more than $103 million over five years while ensuring the continued care of its prisoners, the County of Union today announced it is closing major operations at its jail in Elizabeth, and sending its prisoners to the Essex County Correctional facility in Newark.
The jail will cease the long-term housing of prisoners effective July 1st, and will begin operating as a hub to intake, process, temporarily detain and transport prisoners to the Essex County Correctional facility. Shuttle buses will also be available to transport those wishing to visit prisoners in Essex County.
LPCC staff prepare for mass disaster drill

LAFAYETTE, La. â Lafayette Parish Correctional Center deputies and medical staff conducted a mass disaster drill on Tuesday in order to prepare themselves in the event of an emergency situation.
According to a release from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff s Office, the date, time and circumstances of the disaster scenario remained unknown to staff inside LPCC until the simulated code was called by administrators and it was time to respond.
LPSO says these drills are performed annually in keeping with maintaining LPCCâs accreditation by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.
