The country’s vice president has “no immunity from suit” during his or her term of office.
This was stressed by National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) President Edre U. Ulalia on Saturday night, July 17.
Olalia reacted to President Duterte’s statement that he (the President) may run for the post of vice president in the 2022 elections to avoid lawsuits.
Duterte issued the statement after he pointed out the threats made by former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV and retired Supreme Court (SC) Senior Associate Justice Antonio T. Carpio to file lawsuits after his term ends.
“Sabi ng batas, na kung Bise Presidente ka, may immunity ka. Eh, ‘di tatakbo na lang ako ng Bise Presidente (The law says that if you’re the Vice President, you will have immunity. I will just run then),” the President said.

Dismissed cases: A look at the invalid search warrants vs red-tagged activists
MANILA Several criminal cases filed against progressives have been dismissed as local courts found the evidence inadmissible.
Bulatlat looks into the five of these cases, where charges of illegal possession of firearms and explosives sprung from the enforcement of search warrants issued by so-called warrant factories.
Among the most recent was a Capiz court deciding that a search warrant used in the ‘Bloody December’ raid – issued by a co-equal trial court hundreds of kilometers away – was invalid.

A group of lawyers paid tribute to a trial court decision that nullified the search warrant issued by a Manila court for enforcement in Capiz where nine Tumandok tribesmen were killed and five others were arrested on Dec. 20, 2020.
Capiz Regional trial court (RTC) Judge Rommel Leonor quashed the search warrant issued by the Manila RTC. The quashal led to the release of tribe members Eleutera Caro, Jucie Caro, Rollen Catamin, Marilou Catamin, and Marivic Aguirre.
Under the new rules issued by the Supreme Court (SC), trial courts in the country are authorized to issue warrants only within their judicial regions. The rules revoked the authority granted to some courts, particularly those in Manila and Quezon City, to issue warrants enforceable anywhere in the country.
