Giffords Law Center Score Card Ignores Truth About Gun Deaths

Tweet That gun control advocates lie and mislead is no real surprise to anyone, and in my opinion one of the worst offenders is the Giffords Law Center. Blaming a lack of attention to “gun deaths” on COVID-19, the Giffords Center put out their annual A-F “score card” of state gun laws, and predictably, the freest states fare the worst in their authoritarian estimation. Kansas, for instance, earns an “F” rating, presumably because our gun laws are among the loosest in the nation; open carry has been legal for decades and constitutional carry for several years now, for example. Giffords points out that Kansas has a “gun death rate” of 13.69 per 100,000 residents, slightly higher than the national average of 11.9.

Hidden biological link among autism genes revealed in study

E-Mail A new study of autism risk genes by UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley scientists implicates disruption in prenatal neurogenesis - a process in which specialized progenitor cells give rise to new brain cells - in the development of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The study also shows that estrogen, perhaps in a form produced within brain cells, can protect against this disruption and steer the brain on a normal course of development. The most striking findings in the study, published on January 25, 2021 in Neuron, were derived from experiments using embryos of the western clawed frog (Xenopus tropicalis), a species prized by biologists for the unique insights it offers into development. Human genes involved in development have counterparts with similar functions in Xenopus, and extensive studies correlating human embryonic stages with those of the frog mean that genetic studies in Xenopus can have direct relevance to human development in both health and disease.

ER tool flags teens at high risk for suicide

Suicidal thoughts The screening tool, called the Computerized Adaptive Screen for Suicidal Youth, or CASSY, is designed to be used in emergency rooms through a brief and efficient system that doesn’t disrupt care. When an adolescent or teen is admitted for any reason whether it’s a psychiatric complaint or something unrelated like a sports injury they complete a questionnaire on a digital device. The teen’s answers form the basis for follow-up questions and the number of questions so that the screening is tailored to the individual patient. “Different combinations of risk factors can place youth at risk. If we screen only for suicidal thoughts, we will miss some high-risk adolescents.”

Personalized screening to identify teens with high suicide risk

E-Mail ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The suicide rate among American adolescents has rose drastically over the last decade, but many at-risk youths aren t receiving the mental health services they need. In fact, one of the greatest challenges is identifying the young people who need the most help. Now, researchers have developed a personalized system to better detect suicidal youths. The novel, universal screening tool helps caregivers reliably predict an adolescent s suicide risk - alerting them to which ones need follow-up interventions - according to Michigan Medicine-led findings published in JAMA Psychiatry. Too many young people are dying by suicide and many at high risk go completely unrecognized and untreated, says lead author Cheryl King, Ph.D., a professor, clinical child psychologist, and director of the Youth and Young Adult Depression and Suicide Prevention Research Program in the Department of Psychiatry at Michigan Medicine.
