Brummie great-aunt Olive had fallen for Charlie – local lad and husband-to-be – in the war years. On arriving in town to meet the in-laws in February 1941, family lore has it that Charlie insisted she should see his beloved hometown the moment she arrived – and good thing he did, flattened as it was by German bombardment the next morning.

Firefighters tackle fire at National Museum Wales in Cardiff

Firefighters were at the scene of National Museum Wales, in Cathays in Cardiff, around midday due to a fire in the building, which is currently closed due to coronavirus restrictions. The dome roof of the building appears to have been damaged in the fire, despite recent work undertaken to repair damage to the building s roof. (Picture: South Wales Fire and Rescue Service) A spokesperson for Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, said: “There was a small fire in the dome at National Museum Cardiff around lunchtime today [April 8, 2021].
