Comcast to Double Speeds for Its $10 Low-Income Broadband Plan

(Photo by Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images) Comcast is doubling the speed for its Internet Essentials package a $9.95-a-month plan after a former employee claimed the program’s speed promises were a sham.  The download speed is going up from 25Mbps to 50Mbps. Meanwhile, the upload speed is increasing from 3Mbps to 5Mbps. Most importantly, this is coming at no extra cost for Internet Essentials subscribers, Comcast announced on Tuesday.  “To receive the increased internet speeds, existing customers will not need to do anything. The new speeds will be rolled out nationally beginning March 1,” the company added.  Comcast s Internet Essentials program provides low-income consumers with affordable broadband. It’s available to Americans who qualify for the National School Lunch Program, housing assistance and Medicaid.

Chris Davies - Feb 2, 2021, 9:43am CST Those on Comcast Internet Essentials are getting some good news, with the ISP’s low-income plan doubling its speed for the same price. Launched in 2011, and then extended indefinitely in 2014, Internet Essentials had until now been offering 25 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up. That was actually a speed boost, with Comcast having boosted the rates users could get from the low-cost plan back in March 2020. All the same, despite the changes, the ISP had faced criticism from some that its speeds just weren’t sufficient for the current environment of working from home and forced home-schooling, during the pandemic.
