This April’s event is the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s 20th nationwide event since its inception 10 years ago. Local law enforcement agencies have partnered with the DEA to provide the public the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

Saturday is National Prescription Drug Takeback Day DEA.GOV and last updated 2021-04-24 10:35:21-04 State and government leaders are asking the public to mitigate drug addiction and overdose deaths. The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day allows individuals to safely dispose of unneeded and expired prescription drugs. A national survey conducted in 2019 found that 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers, 4.9 million misused prescription stimulants, and 5.9 misused prescription tranquilizers. By TAPINTO STAFF Credits: Morris County Gov April 24, 2021 at 10:53 AM MORRISTOWN, NJ - Today is the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s 20th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to help people dispose of potentially harmful prescription drugs. Over a ten-year period, the DEA has collected more than 6,800 tons of prescription drugs. Last year there were 4,153 law enforcement sites participating in National Take Back Day. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there has been an increase in overdose deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. There were 83,544 Americans who overdosed during the 12 months ending July 1, 2020, the most ever recorded in a 12-month period, according the DEA.
